Mulching is an attractive way to make your yard look professional and well maintained. Whether you have recently planted saplings or have older, more established trees in your yard, arborist mulching is an important way to keep your trees looking healthy.
How Mulch Benefits Trees
Tree mulch doesn’t just look nice, however. It also provides the following benefits to your trees:
Mulching Best Practices to Keep in Mind
If you want to go about doing it yourself, however, here’s what you’ll need to know in order to get the most out of mulching trees.
Choosing a Mulch
When choosing a tree mulch, opt for organic mulch. You can choose an inexpensive mulch such as a hardwood bark, leaves, and wood mixture to save on costs and ensure your trees are getting a good mix of nutrients and water.
When to Apply Mulch
Though you can apply mulch year-round in most locations, the best time for applying mulch to trees is in the spring, after the last winter freezes. You want the soil to be warm enough for your trees to begin root growth so that the nutrients in the mulch go directly to the new root systems.
How to Apply Mulch to Trees
When it comes to applying the mulch to your trees, aim for a wide perimeter. A good rule of thumb is to mulch all the way to the edge of each canopy, also known as the drip line.
Keep the mulch layers thin, at only 2-4 inches, so as not to under-mulch or over-mulch the area. Too much mulch will stifle tree root systems, while too little mulch can prevent the mulch from adequately protecting the root systems.
Avoid putting the mulch directly next to the trunk. You want the roots closest to the trunk to show to keep roots from girdling the base of the trunk (where an excess of roots grows around the trunk, eventually strangling it.) Aim for 12-18 inches of space between the trunk and the mulch, no matter the size of your tree.
